Come and discover some of the most beautiful villages in Spain
The province of Segovia is home to some of the ‘Most Beautiful Villages in Spain’ that you simply mustn’t miss when you visit the region. Today we’ve chosen three villages that stand out for their traditional architecture, historical and natural heritage, and spectacular, breathtakingly beautiful surroundings.
The route begins in Sepúlveda, a medieval village that invites you to wander its streets at a leisurely pace, keeping your eyes wide open. You must take a stroll through its main square and its streets, pop into its churches – such as the Romanesque gem of El Salvador – and, if you have time, enjoy the town’s natural surroundings, with the marvellous Hoces del Duratón just a stone’s throw away, where the vultures that live there will soar overhead.
After a drive along the road, a visit to the medieval town of Ayllón is also a must, with its entrance arch, the arcaded main square, and the palaces and emblazoned houses that turn the town into a film set, one you simply must immerse yourself in.
And then there’s Maderuelo, a beautiful medieval village in the north of the province, which ticks all the boxes for ‘charming’: entry through the impressive Arco de la Villa, city walls, cobbled streets, religious heritage, and a stunning natural setting with the Linares reservoir at its feet.
Three gems you simply must discover if you choose Segovia as your destination. Three gems not only in terms of heritage and nature, but also in terms of their cuisine, which is well worth a visit.

Segovia’s colourful villages invite you into another world
The well-known villages along the ‘Route of Colour’ in the Sierra de Ayllón, with their yellow, red and black hues, will impress and captivate you on your trip to Segovia, thanks to the materials used to build their houses, which transport you to another era. Without a doubt, the traditional architecture of this area attracts visitors, so you’re sure to want to revisit this route.
Start your tour from Riaza, passing through Alquité and Martín Muñoz de Ayllón, and step into a golden, sparkling world – surprising and marvellous – created by the quartzite used in the houses of these charming villages.
And the fantasy continues through the ‘red’ villages, where you simply must take a stroll through Madriguera and Villacorta, along their streets lined with houses made of iron-rich stone, iron and clay, which give you the feeling of living in a fairy tale.
A few kilometres further on, we come to El Muyo and Becerril, where the colour shifts from red to the charred black of the distinctive slate found in their houses and streets. We continue to feel as though we’re in a story from our childhood, strolling through El Negredo and Serracín too.
Come along – the magic of these colourful villages is waiting for you!

Discover Segovia’s cloisters and castles on a walk through Santa María, Coca and Cuéllar
Are you familiar with the north-west of the province of Segovia? If not, and you’re planning a trip to our region soon, you simply must visit three of Segovia’s towns, each rich in history and heritage.
We begin our tour in Santa María la Real de Nieva, in the heart of the Segovian countryside, a land through which kings and queens once travelled on their journeys across the Castilian plateau. Like a film set, yet very much real, the Monastery of Nuestra Señora de la Soterraña, with its impressive cloister, is a must-see in the town. After a stroll through its streets, you’ll find yourself immersed in the rural charm of the countryside, heading towards Coca.
The birthplace of Emperor Theodosius the Great, Coca boasts an impressive castle in the Gothic-Mudejar style – a majestic fortress that captures the attention and photographs of thousands of visitors. It stands out for its location on flat ground and for being built of reddish brick rather than stone. You’ll be impressed by its enormous moat and intricate Islamic architectural decoration, which make it unique. Whilst in Coca, you must also visit the Tower of San Nicolás, the medieval city walls and the Roman fountain known as the ‘Cinco Caños’.
And the journey continues with more castles. Because if the one in Coca has impressed you, carry on a little further and you’ll reach the town of Cuéllar, also famous for its castle, its Mudejar churches, and its popular bull runs – the oldest in Spain. Do pop in and enjoy a stroll through its streets.

A stroll through the legendary Pirón River valley
When you come to Segovia, you simply must explore some of its most beautiful spots. Today we’re going to focus on one of the province’s most magical natural settings: the Pirón River Valley.
We begin our journey in Turégano, where you must visit the castle – the only one of its kind in Spain, as it is a fortified church. Get out of the car and stroll through the pretty Plaza de España and its surrounding streets, lined with magnificent stately homes.
We continue across the typical, wide Castilian plain towards Torreiglesias, where we recommend an 11-kilometre round-trip walk through unspoilt countryside, which is a low-difficulty route. You start by descending towards the bed of the River Viejo. Follow the path downstream until it joins the River Pirón. The trail through this valley will take you straight to the Cueva de la Vaquera, the Ermita de Santiaguito and, finally, after crossing the Puente de Covatillas, you’ll reach the beautiful hilltop village of Peñarrubias de Pirón.
And to recharge your batteries after the walk, head back to Turégano or pop over to Torrecaballeros, and try some delicious suckling lamb – the province’s star dish – at one of its many restaurants.
